What is an Oktoberfest/Marzen Beer?

In Germany, Märzen has in recent years been replaced at Oktoberfest by a paler "Oktoberfestbier" to suit broader international tastes. Many south Bavarian breweries still faithfully reproduce Märzen, though in small quantities. Most of Munich's big brewers still brew a draft Märzen at Oktoberfest time (September-October) for sale in their beer halls, notably Hofbrau and Spaten. Typically, a Bavarian Märzen will be copper-red, with a full-bodied maltiness, a little spicy and dryish.

Oktoberfest (or Octoberfest) has become a very popular style for U.S. brewers to produce, with many in brewpubs choosing to make a fest beer the only true lager they make during the year.

In "The Birth of Lager," Jackson writes: "It is America's turn to teach the Germans something: to show them that traditions can be rediscovered."

The result is that American consumers have many wonderful choices, with far too many regional choices to list completely. These include bottled products from craft breweries, but also many available only on draft. And many brewpubs make a Fest beer, although some are a traditional lagers and others may be ales (be sure to ask before ordering).

There are several nationally distributed Oktoberfest/Märzen beers, both German-  and U.S.-made, to choose from. Most of these beers are about 5.6-5.9% alcohol by volume, somewhat stronger than Budweiser (5%).

Here are some of our favorites:

Ayinger Oktoberfest-Märzen
From the Ayinger Brewery in Germany. The beer is amber, with plenty of the malty flavor expected from Bavarian malts and a sweet accent. Spicy-dry aftertaste with a faint mild hop background.

Beck's Oktoberfest
From Germany. Brewed for export to the United States. Reddish-amber beer. Shows a bit of malt sweetness, less hoppiness than others of the style.

Samuel Adams OctoberFest (FAVORITE!!)
From Boston Beer Co. A combination of four malts produces a deep amber beer. Plenty of malty flavors up front, balanced by a combination of noble hops.

Spaten
Spaten is Munich's original brewery and lays claim to producing the first Oktoberfest beer in 1872, its Ur-Märzen. Spaten also brews a paler - more golden than amber - Oktoberfestbier. Both versions are well balanced with a proper dryish finish.

Otter Creek Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is our version of the perennial favorite Bavarian Autumn beer. Oktoberfest’s deep golden hue helps bring to mind the old country and its time honored traditions. Brewed with Hallertau and Tettnang hops to balance its clean, malty sweetness, it’s the perfect brew for a crisp Autumn day. Available from August to November.'

BBC Oktoberfest

Aged for months prior to release, this lager is brewed using German hops and yeast, true to tradition. Its orange-amber hue and its elegant and complex malt structure produces a smooth brew. It finishes with hints of spice and a subtle hop flavor.

Wachusett Octoberfest

We use traditional Oktoberfest specialty malts and hops to handcraft our interpretation of the style. Deep copper color with a predominant Euro-malty flavor and balanced bitterness.

Harpoon Octoberfest

The character and complexity of Harpoon Octoberfest comes from the malt and hops.  When looking at a freshly poured Harpoon Octoberfest, you will notice the garnet-red color with a firm, creamy head.  The beer’s color is from a blend of Munich, chocolate, and pale malt.  The thick head results in part from wheat malt added to the grist.  The hop aroma of this beer is not overpowering but it is present.  Tettnang hops add a subtle spice nose that blends with the malt character.  This beer is full-bodied, smooth, and malty.  Willamettehops are used to provide a gentle bitterness and to balance any residual sweetness present from the malt.  The finish is soft and malty with a mild bitterness.

What is a pumpkin beer? (www.beeradvocate.com)

Often released as a fall seasonal, Pumpkin Ales are quite varied. Some brewers opt to add hand-cut pumpkins and drop them in the mash, while others use puree or pumpkin flavoring. These beers also tend to be spiced with pumpkin pie spices, like: ground ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. Pumpkin Ales are typically mild, with little to no bitterness, a malty backbone, with some spice often taking the lead. Many will contain a starchy, slightly thick-ish, mouthfeel too. In our opinion, best versions use real pumpkin, while roasting the pumpkin can also add tremendous depth of character for even better results, though both methods are time-consuming and tend to drive brewmasters insane.

Here are some of our favorites:

Post Road Pumpkin

Blended with barley malt, pumpkins becamse a commonly used beer ingredient. Post Road Pumpkin Ale brings back this tasty tradition. Hundreds of pounds of pumpkins are blended into the mash of each batch, creating a beer with an orange amber color, warm pumpkin aroma, biscuity malt center, and crisp finish.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, organic brown sugar and spices. This is the perfect beer to warm-up with, as the season cools.

Southampton Pumpkin Ale

Southampton Pumpkin Ale is an unique amber-colored brew that has particular appeal during the autumn months and the holidays of Halloween and Thanksgiving. We use a generous amount of pumpkin as well as traditional "pumpkin pie" spices to give this unusual brew a definite seasonal character. Available in 22oz bottles and seasonal draft.

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale (FAVORITE!!)

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale is a crisp and refreshing wheat ale with delightful aromatics and subtle spiced flavor.

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”

Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout

Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout is a dark stout accentuated by the flavors of the Autumn season. Using real pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, the Cape Ann Brewing Company took a fresh take at the common fall seasonal. This rich dark stout offers an inviting pumpkin spice aroma that gives way to the potent roasted chocolate flavors of a stout and finishes with the delicate essence of real pumpkin.

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale

Like a pyramid for a pharaoh, we set out to make a bold monument for The King of the Pumpkins! This 8.0% ABV pumpkin ale is the mother of all pumpkin ales. It is heartier, spicier, and more “caramelly” and “pumpkiny” than its faint brethren!

Jack's Pumpkin Spice Ale

Our fall seasonal is a subtle, well-balanced ale, copper in color, offering rich, full flavors and aromas of pumpkin and spices. This all-malt ale is brewed with golden delicious pumpkins and select seasonal spices, including nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and clove.

Beck's Pilsner (from the website) - Made from the original 1873 recipe, our signature brew has a full-bodied taste, hoppy bouquet, golden color and rich full head. Your tasting notes might say something like "a slightly fruity but crisp firmness - ends with a clean dry finish," but most people simply say, "Now that's a Beck's."

Jacob's Creek Chardonnay (from the website) - Chardonnay is unquestionably the most important white grape variety around the world, and this is certainly the case in Australia, where it is used to produce sparkling and dry white wine styles. Chardonnay grown in warm regions of Australia produces wines with ripe melon flavours, in the cooler areas the flavours tend to be more peach and citrus-like.  Some of Australia’s most popular Chardonnays are often blends of wines made from both warm and cool regions. With rare exceptions, Chardonnay benefits from maturation in oak, the oak flavour greatly complementing the fruit flavours of Chardonnay. Australian Chardonnay wines are best drunk when they are relatively young (1-3 years), and are an exceptionally good accompaniment to a range of foods from delicate seafood through most white meats or some red meats, including lamb. This versatile variety when blended with Pinot Noir makes Australia’s greatest sparkling wines. Chardonnay is successful in many districts of Australia, with the most famous being Padthaway, Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills and the Margaret River in Western Australia.
